Department of Economics

Vision:

To impart the quality education, promote employment opportunities, interact with community, engage in socio-economic activities.

Objectives:

  2. To train young men and women to be the leaders of tomorrow to serve humanity.
  3. To engage students in field studies.
  4. To encourage the students to apply the principles of economics to solve the practical problems.
  5. To mould our youth as intellectually competent, psychologically integrated and morally upright social beings.

  • Making students transform the society as a whole by upholding human dignity, truth, harmony and nobility.

About the Department:

The Department of Economics came into existence in 1950, with the strength of 25 students. Since its inception, the department has been attracting more and more students responding to the growing needs of society.  During the academic year 2014-15 the strength of department was 498.

The department is proud to mention some stalwarts who worked in the department Prof.C.B.Chandrashekarappa, Dr.Basanna, Prof.Gurubasappa, Dr.Sheshadri, Dr.R.V.Vastrad, Dr.A.Mallappa, Dr.K.M.Ajjaiah.

Besides, Dr.B.Sheshadri the member of our faculty was selected for the top government post  Press Secretary to the then Chief Minister of Karnataka, Mr.R.Gundu Rao and was also nominated as one of the members of the Higher-Power Committee to Study Regional imbalances of Karnataka.

Economics has its own significance at the regional, national and international levels. Economics is a positive and normative science, because economic principles give the guideline to solve the various problems of the economy of the country.  Most of the students choose Economics as the optional subject for IAS/IPS/CA, KPSC/UPSC and other competitive examinations. This indicates the vast significance of economics.

In B.A. and B.Com. programmes, the students choose Economics as one of the optional subjects. The basic inputs namely books and journals are collected in Central Library.  The number of text and reference books available in the Library to the students are around 4,304. More than 85% of students pass every year and some students have secured ranks.

About Faculty:

The Department is now headed by Sri.Naga Reddy, Associate Professor, the other members of the department are Sri.C.Mantrajathaiah, Associate Professor and Sri.G.Deva Reddy, Associate Professor.

All the members of the faculty are very active in participating National, International Seminars and academic activities to improve the performance of the students.
