Field Trip to Sandur – Experiential Learning

The Staff and Students of Botany Department visited Sandur Hills which resemble the western ghats of Karnataka on 14/10/2018. Three Staff Members and 75 students went on field trip to Sandur. During the Field Trip, they have undertaken the study of various rare medicinal plants that are exclusively seen in Sandur Medicinal Plant area. About 563 species of medicinal plants are minutely observed and studied by the students. Some of them are Adhatoda zeylanica,, Acacia catechu, Aloe sps, Withania somnifera, Phyllanthus emblica, Helicteres isora, Holarrhena antidysenterica, Santalum album, Gymnema sylvestris etc.  The Sandur Hill area is popularly known for Bio-Diversity. Some of the wild animals like Leopard, Wolves, Sloth Bears, Jackals and birds of rare varieties etc. are residing in this area. The students also visited Swamy Malaya Hills and Ramdurga Hills from which they also collected medicinal plants for the purpose of research study and they have been preserved as herbarium in the Department of Botany. This field trip helped the staff and students to gain experiential learning.
